In television and radio, breaking news is a major event that warrants an interruption of current non-news programming, or occasionally a live broadcast from a newsroom. Historically, such events were signalled by a special graphic on the screen stating “Newsflash” or “Special Report” (and sometimes just the latter) and an announcement asking viewers to stand by. When the breaking story is very serious, networks will interrupt their own newscasts with a countdown sequence to allow local network affiliates to switch to a network feed. More recently, some networks have used breaking news tickers during regularly scheduled programs, lessening the need for break-ins.
