The first definition of breaking news is limited to news that is urgent. The assassination of John F. Kennedy was one of the first examples. The coverage by Walter Cronkite was particularly notable. However, 24-hour news channels dilute the meaning of the term by filling the time with commentary and rehashing the story again. However, breaking news may also refer to no news at all, which makes the term redundant.
The ABC breaking news ending varies. This version ends with a disclaimer to get more information. It also uses the words “special report” and “breaking news.”
Earlier coverage of breaking news was often sketchy. This is due to the limited information available at the time. For example, it was widely reported that no one survived the Sago Mine disaster in Indonesia. Similarly, less serious news may be reported too quickly. The news may be incomplete or inaccurate and not be corrected until it’s published in the next few days. Ultimately, the focus of current news is to inform the public about important events.
