Breaking news is a term used by broadcast television and radio stations to refer to a news event that is so important, time-sensitive or urgent that it warrants interruption of non-news programming, or in the case of 24-hour news networks, regularly scheduled live newscasts. A break in programming is usually accompanied by an alert crawl and countdown sequence, as well as an opening graphic that includes a distinctive music cue to mark the start of breaking news coverage.

A number of events have been labeled breaking news in recent history, including the assassination of John F. Kennedy, the war in Iraq, and severe weather events like tornado warnings and hurricanes. As the need for breaking news continues to grow, broadcasters have adapted new formats and delivery systems to meet the demand. In addition to breaking news, some stations now incorporate analysis about the story via in-studio or remote guests.
