In television, breaking news refers to an event that elicits nationwide coverage and requires numerous stations to interrupt regular programming (or, in the case of national network broadcasts, their regular newscast). It is also referred to as a “Newsflash” or “Special Report”. Before 24-hour news networks existed, interruptions of current non-news programming for news events were rare; they generally occurred only when an emergency situation such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy arose, or for other extremely urgent events such as natural disasters. During breaking news reports, the station’s regular commercial advertising is temporarily suspended and an opening graphic and distinctive music cue will usually appear on-screen to alert viewers of the break in the program. The newscast itself may then begin.
