When a breaking news event occurs that is of such significance that it necessitates an interruption in regular non-news programming (or, in some cases, regularly scheduled newscasts), a network will usually interrupt its feed with an opening graphic and distinctive music cue. The station identification of any network affiliates that are participating in the breaking news report will be overlaid on the graphic. This type of news break is sometimes referred to as a “Newsflash” or a “Special Report”. Such reports were previously limited to events of national interest, such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy in 1963, which required numerous stations across the country to interrupt their regularly scheduled programming for live coverage.
