When an event occurs that requires immediate attention, a news network may interrupt regularly scheduled programming to break the story. This can happen in-studio, via satellite, broadband (B-GAN) or over the air on network affiliates. Usually, a countdown is shown on the network feed to allow affiliates to switch over and begin broadcasting the breaking news. Depending on the severity of the event, network affiliates may use a special graphics package and music cue to convey urgency. This type of reporting was rarely used before 24-hour news networks began, and even then only for events requiring national coverage, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy.
