About Current News
When an event occurs that warrants breaking-news coverage, it usually requires interrupting regular non-news programming and/or a network newscast. When a breaking-news report is needed, a national network will alert its affiliates to “stand by” for an interruption in their program feed. The station will then pause its current non-news programming, followed by a countdown to signal that the network’s feed is coming on. A news graphic or special newsflash, typically accompanied by a distinctive music cue, will then appear, with the network identifying itself as the source. This was common prior to the emergence of 24-hour news networks.
