The term “current news” describes the broadcasting of current events. News reports can range from a few minutes to several hours. There are instances when news events last for several days, such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963, or the September 11 terrorist attacks on the United States on September 11, 2001. In such cases, networks will often combine analysis of the story with live coverage, with analysts sitting in studios, over the phone or via satellite. During sustained coverage, regular commercial advertising may be halted.
Streaming news is one example of this, where news arrives on demand. Rather than being delayed or unable to be watched live, streaming news is available on demand, and can travel with the viewer wherever they go. It also reduces the concept of scarcity in the media equation. Therefore, current news is a vital part of life. However, the term “breaking news” is not always used as the most appropriate one. Instead, it can be synonymous with “special report,” “breaking news,” or “just in” if the news is a breaking story.
Local broadcast stations are given the opportunity to break away from the network feed in the evening when their newscasts are scheduled to end. Typically, they are given a cue by the network’s talent, who pauses the coverage for a few seconds before rolling the opening graphic again. Once this occurs, the broadcaster will return to the network feed to complete the coverage. Alternatively, they will also return to the network feed and begin an “extended edition” if they feel the situation warrants it.
