When news breaks that elicits nationwide coverage, or requires stations to interrupt current non-news programming for an extended period of time, it is usually announced through a special breaking news graphic with a distinctive music cue. Until 24-hour news networks became commonplace, such interruptions were only used for extremely urgent events, such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy, or for severe weather events (which are typically announced through alert crawls during regular programming). On many network newscasts today, the opening is accompanied by a countdown sequence for affiliates to switch to a national network feed.
