It is commonly used by broadcasters to provide coverage of important events that require immediate attention. The word breaking typically refers to events that are developing quickly, but it can also imply events that are not currently occurring but will soon, such as a tornado warning or an imminent hurricane landfall. When breaking news occurs, the station or network will often alert its affiliates to expect an interruption. The network may then begin a countdown sequence to allow the affiliates time to switch to its breaking news feed.
