Trending is the term used by television and radio news channels to refer to events that are most popular. These trends are determined by the number of times a particular topic is searched for on Google. Trending is often used as a tool to inform viewers of breaking news or other events. If a story is considered to be urgent and requires an interruption in non-news programming (or, in the case of national network newscasts, a pause in a live broadcast), a countdown sequence may appear on screen before the breaking news is introduced. This is often accompanied by a distinctive newsflash or special report graphic and music cue.
