A breaking news report (also known as a Newsflash or Special Report) is a live television segment that interrupts regular programming to cover an urgent or developing story. Unlike the cut-ins that were used before 24-hour news channels existed, these reports are usually accompanied by an on-screen alert, a countdown sequence and a distinctive music cue. In addition, lower thirds and station imaging may be altered to convey the sense of urgency. Breaking news reports can last for a few minutes or continue for hours and even days in some cases. This type of reporting is also common on weather events that require a national network feed.
