Often, when an event is breaking and needs to be immediately reported on by network news stations, they will interrupt regular non-news programming with what are called “Newsflash” or “Special report” alert crawls or cut-ins. If the event is large enough that it warrants a full interruption of regular programming, this may include a countdown sequence and a special opening graphic with a distinctive music cue to identify the network.
