Current News (also known as Late Breaking News, Special Report or Breaking Coverage) is a type of news coverage that involves the interrupting of scheduled programming for the purposes of reporting the details of an important event. This may involve the death of a significant political figure, an earthquake or other natural disaster, or an explosion.
Generally, breaking news is broadcast on television as a special report or live newscast, rather than in a regular newscast slot. During such events, the broadcaster alerts its affiliates via an internal message service telling them to stand by for a pre-determined cut-in time (usually five seconds) allowing any network affiliates to join the feed as they are able to do so.
The broadcast often begins with an opening graphic, featuring music (such as NBC’s “The Pulse of Events”, composed by John Williams) that adds an emphasis on the importance of the event. Next, the broadcast will introduce a news anchor who welcomes viewers to the broadcast and introduces the story at hand.
If the story is a local event, coverage is usually imposed for the duration of the newscast; however, some stations may wait until they have a reporter at the scene and will promise more details as they become available. The coverage then ends with a promo, often directing viewers to the network’s news division website or other outlets for further information.
While breaking news on television is considered to be a form of news coverage, the term is often misunderstood by some, primarily because it applies to soft stories of questionable importance and urgency. This has resulted in a variety of criticisms, including the dilution of its meaning by the need for 24-hour news channels to fill their time with “breaking” stories.
