Breaking news is an event or series of events that elicits immediate, important, and/or urgent coverage on television and radio. In the past, this would usually involve a national network interrupting regular non-news programming (or, in some cases, regularly scheduled newscasts) to present the breaking story, often followed by a live or prerecorded interview with an expert on the subject matter. This type of breaking news may also require the network to interrupt local station advertising. Before the advent of 24-hour news channels, this type of breaking news was generally restricted to severe, imminent threats such as a tornado or landfalling hurricane.
