Facebook’s algorithm identifies potential trending topics based on volume of mentions and sharp increase in mentions. It does this by scanning external RSS websites to identify breaking news events. It then validates the topic to ensure that it is linked to a current news event. The news system also provides links to relevant news services and media that have millions of followers around the globe.
