For decades, the news has lived on cable. However, streaming TV has changed that. Online video streaming is likely to transform political and news coverage in the years to come.
Streaming has democratized the news experience, and its advantages are clear. Unlike cable, which is bound by a limited number of TV licenses, online video streamers can reach audiences wherever they are. They also allow for the ability to archive content. This enables newscasters to serve viewers in a way that matches their viewing habits.
Streaming news also sets the stage for new entrants into the field. As an example, Cheddar, Newsy and Bloomberg have planted flags in the streaming frontier. In addition, major streaming networks have repurposed programming from the broadcasting world.
While many newscasts have invested hundreds of millions of dollars in their streaming operations, they have not been able to capitalize on this potential. Critics have often lamented the lack of viewers. But streaming has also proven to attract niche audiences.
One example is Fox Nation, a streaming app launched by Fox. The app has attracted 1.5 million subscribers. It offers content ranging from reruns to documentaries.
ABC News has entered the news streaming business. It operates an Internet Ventures division. That unit produces 10 hours of programming per day.
Another notable competitor is CBS. The network plans to beam 45,000 hours of local news in 2022.
Among the major streaming networks, CNN+ failed to capture viewers. Meanwhile, Fox Nation has attracted 1.5 million subscribers.
