About Trending
Breaking news is the interruptive coverage of urgent, highly important events on television and radio. When such events occur, stations may interrupt current non-news programming, or in the case of network newscasts, pause a countdown sequence on the network feed so that local station affiliates can join the feed and switch to the breaking news segment. The segment is often introduced by a graphic containing a distinctive music cue, and can be accompanied by lower thirds that display station identification and/or an alert crawl. Before the advent of 24-hour news networks, breaking news was typically limited to major national events that required many stations to interrupt their regular schedules.
