Current News is a category of broadcast television news programs that focus on current issues. It is sometimes also referred to as a breaking news program, special report, or news flash.
Breaking news (also called late-breaking news) is a term used to describe a situation where a news event warrants an interruption of current programming and/or a live reporting of its details. In North America, breaking news coverage typically begins with an opening graphic and a voiceover that announces the break and introduces the anchor who will lead the live coverage.
A breaking news story may last a few minutes, several hours, or several days depending on the nature of the event and how much time is spent covering it. It is usually accompanied by footage and analysis of the event in studio and on-location.
In addition to network and local television, breaking news coverage can also be produced for radio. Often, local radio stations will only provide local breaking news when there is an emergency or a severe weather event occurring in the area.
If the story is a major one, the local station may be allowed to break away from the network feed for a short period of time, allowing them to begin their own local evening newscast. In these cases, an opening graphic is rolled and information is disseminated via an internal alert service provided by the station’s master control.
The closing credits usually include a promo that encourages viewers to continue following the breaking news. This may be by visiting the station’s website or other platforms for more information on the story.
