Breaking news is a term used by television and radio broadcasters to indicate that an event is occurring, which requires them to interrupt non-news programming or pause a regularly scheduled newscast for live coverage. In many cases, the breaking story will be indicated by a special graphic, with distinctive music cues. Lower thirds and other graphics may also be altered to convey a sense of urgency. Before the existence of 24-hour news networks, such interruptions were rare, and were only reserved for events that elicited nationwide interest, such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963.
