When a breaking news event occurs that warrants an immediate interruption of current non-news programming, or in the case of some network newscasts, a regularly scheduled program, a station will issue a special alert. The network will pause its regular feed, and the stations on their affiliate list will receive a countdown sequence to signal that they should start switching over to the network’s breaking news feed. A graphic with a distinctive music cue is then displayed and an anchor or news team begins covering the story. Depending on the severity of the situation, the report may last just minutes or continue for hours or even days.
