Current News is the broadcasting of current events, often including breaking news. It is also known as late-breaking news, special report, or breaking news flash.
Breaking news is any breaking story that warrants the interruption of other programming or live coverage for an in-depth report of it. This type of coverage may be interrupted for a limited number of minutes, or may last for several hours and even days at a time.
In the United States, television networks typically alert their affiliates via an internal alert/message service to stand by for an incoming breaking news feed. This announcement is usually followed by an opening graphic, music (such as NBC’s “The Pulse of Events”) and a voiceover announcing the news.
When a news event occurs, the network or station will then introduce a breaking news anchor who welcomes the viewers to the story and tells them about the event that has broken out. The anchor then introduces a reporter who is at the scene of the event. The reporter then interviews the person who is in charge of the incident, providing more details as they become available.
If the breaking news takes place during a newscast, the broadcaster will either join in the coverage with the anchor, or begin new programming at the point of the interruption, depending on how much time was taken. This is often accompanied by a reminder to the viewers that there will be more information on their local newscast that day or on the network’s overnight news program (if applicable) in the morning.
