Breaking news is an urgent event in the form of a breaking story that requires interruption of current non-news programming or, at a minimum, an alert crawl or other graphics during regular programing. Breaking news typically comes from an outside source, such as a police or fire department, or is the result of an ongoing natural disaster. This type of news is typically reported as an exclusive to the network’s newscast and may require the station to suspend commercial advertising. It also often results in the network supplying a “special report” feed to its affiliates, which can interrupt their own non-news programing with the national newscast to carry the breaking story.
