Breaking News is an event that warrants breaking into regular programming, interrupting a normal television or radio broadcast. A national network may alert its affiliate stations to a special report and pause its current newscast, or a local station may interrupt its regularly scheduled newscast. A countdown sequence is usually used to let affiliates know how long the network newscast will be interrupted. A “Newsflash” or “Special report” graphic may appear on-screen and a distinctive music cue is played to signal that an emergency is at hand. When 24-hour news networks first appeared, the need for cutting-ins was limited to extremely urgent news events, such as a terrorist attack or a sudden natural disaster.
