When a breaking news event occurs, stations usually interrupt their non-news programming (or, in the case of a national network, the regularly scheduled newscast) to broadcast live coverage of the story. The breaking news is accompanied by a special graphic, and music cued to convey urgency. A news anchor is typically the first to appear, with a countdown sequence indicating how much time is remaining until the next break in regular programming. Depending on the severity of the breaking news event, the broadcast may remain paused for extended periods of time and use lower thirds or other graphics to communicate that an interruption is in progress.
