When a story breaks that requires immediate, nationwide coverage, television stations interrupt regular programming (or, in the case of national network newscasts, their affiliates’ regularly scheduled programming). An announcement is made to viewers telling them to stand by, and a countdown sequence is used to allow the affiliated stations to switch to the network feed for the breaking news. This countdown is often accompanied by a graphic and a distinctive, urgent music cue. Previously, this type of programming interruption was only used for extremely urgent news events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy.
