Breaking news is an immediate, urgent and important event or piece of news requiring live coverage. This type of reporting is typically done by broadcasting stations and network news programs, which may interrupt regular non-news programming or an ongoing or regularly scheduled newscast in order to cover the breaking event. Often, when a major event occurs that warrants breaking news coverage, an opening graphic is displayed with a distinctive music cue and the station identification is overlaid, indicating that the program is being interrupted. Prior to the advent of 24-hour news networks, this type of interruption was typically reserved for national events such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, and severe weather situations that required immediate, nationwide coverage. NBC News currently uses its “Newsflash” and “Special Report” tickers to cover breaking stories during regularly scheduled programming, which lessens the need for cut-ins.
