When breaking news occurs that warrants the interruption of non-news programming or a regularly scheduled network newscast, a “Newsflash” or “Special Report” segment will be introduced. Often, the network will alert affiliate stations to stand by and begin counting down a few seconds before the news break begins. The segment usually includes a graphic, a distinctive music cue and the appearance of a news anchor. Kennedy in 1963. Newsflash segments are now common on many news programs and some weather segments.
