The term “breaking news” refers to a current event that warrants an immediate, urgent and widespread media coverage, requiring the interruption of non-news programming (or, for network affiliates, of a regularly scheduled newscast). Such events may require a live televised interruption, where a station will alert its audience through a countdown sequence and ask its viewers to stand by for the special report; or, less formally, they can use a special graphics package with an alarming headline, such as Newsflash or Special report.
