Current News is a type of television or radio news program that reports on the most recent news events. It is also referred to as breaking news, special report, or news flash.

Breaking news consists of broadcasters interrupting programming and/or current news in order to inform viewers of the most recent developments surrounding an event or story. In addition to reporting on a specific event, a breaking news program may cover news from other areas, as well.

The format of a breaking news segment typically involves the pause of network programs (or, for local stations, local programs if a local event is being reported) and the introduction of a live anchor. A brief opening graphic featuring music, and a voiceover that explains the breaking event are used to draw viewers’ attention and communicate a sense of urgency.

During a breaking news segment, the network will usually alert all affiliates via an internal alert/message service that the station is to stand by for interruption. The network’s feed will then switch to a reverse countdown, usually from 5 seconds, to allow any affiliated stations to join the network’s feed.

When the interruption is complete, the program will then begin a new segment with more details on the breaking news event. This is followed by a disclaimer that viewers will be able to find more information on the news division’s website and other platforms if they would like to continue following the story.
