Breaking News

A breaking news story is one that is so urgent, it warrants an interruption of regular programming. Often, networks will pre-empt certain segments of programs to air as a part of their coverage; this is done in a variety of ways depending on the situation.

In television, this is commonly achieved by pausing the network’s live feed to allow affiliated stations to join the broadcast as it airs, with an opening graphic and voiceover announcing the cut-in. Occasionally, local stations may break away from the network feed for an “extended edition” that runs for several minutes after the event has ended.

During a breaking news episode, the anchor will usually make a point of reminding viewers that more details can be found on their local station’s morning and evening newscasts (if applicable), as well as on the network’s overnight news program the following day. During the evening newscast, the network’s affiliates in that time zone will often have the opportunity to resume their own programming, though in some cases (such as the April 2017 Shayrat missile strike), this may not be possible due to time constraints.

While breaking news events on television are common, they are not always the best way to report on a story. For example, the Sago Mine disaster in Australia was a breaking news event, but it did not include all the details of the accident that were later available. This was because it is difficult to report on an accident while still being able to obtain a full accounting of what happened.
