A breaking news story is a news event that requires an immediate interruption of regular non-news programming, or in some cases, regularly scheduled network or affiliate newscasts. Breaking news coverage may last for just a few minutes, or continue for hours, days, and sometimes weeks or more. The occurrence of such an event will usually cause the network to issue a special graphic, known as a “Newsflash” or a “Special Report,” accompanied by a distinctive music cue to alert viewers that there is important news to be shared.
