When breaking news events occur that require an interruption of non-news programming, a network will typically alert affiliate stations to stand by for a national feed. Once the network feed is in place, a countdown sequence will usually begin, allowing affiliated stations to switch over to the network news. Often, the break will also include a graphic and a distinctive music cue to indicate that a special report is about to begin. This type of reporting is known as a “Newsflash” or “Special Report” (see below). Before the rise of 24-hour news networks, such interruptions were restricted to exceptionally urgent events, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy in 1963.
