Breaking news is the earliest, most urgent, and most immediate type of news report. It typically requires an immediate interruption of regular programming, such as a television or radio newscast. A special graphic (often referred to as a “Newsflash” or “Special Report”) and distinctive music cues are used to indicate the break. The national network will usually tell its affiliates to “stand by” and then switch to a live feed. Breaking news reports may last a few minutes or for hours or even days, depending on the nature of the event.
