In television and radio broadcasting, breaking news is an urgent announcement of an event or situation that requires immediate attention. The term can be used to refer to a single story, or may apply to a series of events that require extensive coverage, such as severe weather or a natural disaster. Prior to the advent of 24-hour news networks, programming interruptions for breaking stories were typically reserved for extremely serious events that required a national response, such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy in 1963, when stations across the country would stop their regular programming to interrupt with a “Newsflash” or a special report, often accompanied by a dramatic music cue.
