Breaking news is a term used to describe an urgent, time-sensitive event that necessitates the interruption of non-news programming. This type of news coverage typically begins with a countdown sequence from the network feed, which alerts local affiliates to interrupt their current non-news programming (or even regularly scheduled newscasts), so that they can switch over to the network feed to begin broadcasting the breaking story. Often, lower thirds and other graphics will be altered to convey a sense of urgency. This type of news reporting was once only available during extremely severe weather events, such as land-falling hurricanes or tornado warnings, but is now commonplace on 24-hour cable and satellite networks.
