Trending is a term that refers to stories that are currently being talked about on social media, or in news articles. When a breaking story occurs, television and radio stations will interrupt their non-news programming and use a newsflash or special report graphic to alert viewers that there is urgent news to cover. Depending on the event, this interruption may last only a few minutes, or it can last hours or even days. During this time, stations will usually display an overlay of their own station identification to distinguish themselves from the national network feed. In the past, this was used only for events that were deemed to be exceptionally important, such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963.
