When a major event occurs that warrants immediate coverage on television or radio, a network will interrupt other non-news programming with a special graphic and countdown sequence. This is known as a “Newsflash” or “Special Report”, and can last for several minutes to hours or even days. Prior to the advent of 24-hour news networks, breaking news reports were limited to events that would elicit nationwide coverage and require many stations to stop their regular programming.
