Current News (also known as Breaking News or Late-Breaking news) is a term used by television and radio broadcasters for news stories that require interruption of existing programming to report on the event. Originally, these breaks were restricted to extremely urgent events or news that was happening in real time, but now they are also applied to soft news items that would normally not warrant the interruption of a program.

A breaking news story typically begins with an opening graphic, featuring music and/or an image of the event in progress. This is followed by an introduction from a news anchor and the story itself. Lower thirds and other graphics may be altered to convey a sense of urgency.

The news anchor usually emphasizes the importance of the event and promises more details later as they become available. During the early stages of coverage, details are often sketchy due to limited information and/or lack of media access.

If a national network’s newscast is in progress, it will pause temporarily for other network affiliates to join the feed. The network’s talent will then re-roll the opening graphic, and may also introduce a live reporter who will provide more information about the news event.

During the newscast, the reporter will either report directly to the anchor or be introduced as part of a segment that will continue for a period of time. In the latter case, a short outro is usually presented, directing viewers to other platforms for more coverage.
