Breaking News is the term used to refer to any national or international event that elicits such widespread coverage as to warrant interrupting non-news programming, such as regular television and radio newscasts. When breaking news occurs during a nationally broadcast network newscast, the network alerts its affiliates to stand by and will pause the current newscast with a countdown sequence, until any affiliated station can switch to the network feed. Often times, the breaking news report will feature analysis of the event from on-site reporters and/or analysts in studio. This type of reporting was previously reserved for only the most urgent events, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, which required a nationwide interruption of programming.
