Breaking news is live coverage of an event or incident that warrants immediate or sustained attention, typically requiring the interruption of regular programming. This type of reporting is often done in lieu of an alert crawl on the bottom of a screen or on lower third graphics, and may be introduced by a countdown graphic with a distinctive news music cue. Depending on the severity of the event, network affiliates are often notified to interrupt their local newscasts with a breaking news report; this is known as a Newsflash or Special Report (see below). Breaking news is also commonplace on 24-hour cable and satellite news networks, which have an anchor available for instant interruptions.
