Trending is a term used for breaking news stories that are gaining popularity or interest on social media. It can also refer to a segment within a news program that is currently a top story. Typically, if breaking news occurs during a regular national network newscast or other scheduled programming, the broadcaster will alert its affiliates and ask them to “stand by for an interruption”. The interruption may include a newsflash graphic or countdown sequence to allow affiliated stations to switch to the network feed. Station identification is often overlaid or reduced in size for this type of report. Other graphics such as lower thirds and the news ticker may be altered to convey a sense of urgency.
