A breaking news story is a topic that elicits enough coverage for the network to interrupt non-news programs or, in some cases, regularly scheduled newscasts. When such an event occurs, the broadcaster usually alerts its affiliates to stand by, and then pauses the national feed in order for local stations to switch over to the network’s feed. Once the break is over, the network typically returns to the regular schedule with a special report or a ticker that highlights the news item at hand. The opening graphic and music cue of the special report are often distinct from the station imaging promo or the program reminder used at the top of the hour.
