Trending is a feature on Current News that highlights the stories that are most popular with viewers. It is similar to the “Top Story” feature on some major online news outlets. When a story is trending, it appears in a prominent position on the screen with an associated headline and thumbnail photo, and is highlighted in a distinctive color or style. In addition, a special alert graphic and/or music cue is used to imply urgency. Historically, breaking news events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy required nationwide interruptions of non-news programming, or the use of a newsflash or special report during regular network newscasts.
