When breaking news events occur that require immediate and urgent coverage, television stations interrupt their regular non-news programming to provide a “special report” or “breaking news”. This usually begins with a graphic that says “Newsflash” or “Special report”, followed by the national network feed telling all affiliates to stand by for a break. Once the national network newscast has paused, an anchor then introduces the story and continues to update it through studio or remote analysis (often with lower thirds that are altered to convey urgency). Breaking news reports typically last only minutes, but can extend for hours and even days, particularly when a national crisis is involved.
