When breaking news occurs that warrants the interruption of non-news programming or a regularly scheduled newscast, a network will typically alert its affiliates to stand by and then interrupt their regular program feed with a special report. The breaking news coverage may last a few minutes, or multiple hours or days depending on the event in question. Often the network will include analysis of the event in addition to reporting it; and graphic elements such as lower thirds and station imaging promos may be modified to convey a sense of urgency. Breaking news is also the reason for the common use of the term “Newsflash” or “Special Report”. See also Breaking News.
