A breaking news event may be an ongoing crisis, or it may require an immediate, nationwide response such as severe weather, a terrorist attack, or the death of a public figure. In the past, major network stations would interrupt regularly scheduled newscasts to report on breaking events such as these, often overlaid with a graphic and distinctive music cue. More recently, 24-hour news networks have shifted to using “Special Report” tickers during regular programs that are breaking newsworthy events, lessening the need for interruptions.
