A breaking news event is a current event that requires an immediate, urgent response by television and radio broadcasters. If a major story breaks during regular programming, the program is interrupted with a countdown sequence and a special graphic (such as a newsflash or special report). News programs will often interrupt network affiliates’ local non-news programming if the breaking event is national in scope and elicits nationwide coverage. Until the rise of 24-hour news networks, break-ins were normally limited to extremely serious events such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy, which elicited a national response requiring many stations to interrupt their normal programming for live coverage.
