Breaking news is a segment of a television or radio broadcast that interrupts normal programming to cover an urgent event, such as a severe weather warning or an ongoing terrorist attack. Until the rise of 24-hour cable and satellite news networks, such interruptions were rare, reserved for events that prompted nationwide coverage and required numerous stations to interrupt their regular programming, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Such breaks are sometimes referred to as “Newsflash” or “Special Report.” During a breaking news event, the network typically informs its affiliates and asks them to stand by for an interrupting graphic that will begin in a few seconds, and may also use a countdown sequence to ensure all affiliated stations can join in on the news feed simultaneously.
