Trending is a feature on Current News that talks about the stories that are getting lots of attention on social media. From Joe Rogan describing the way President Trump fast-tracked research into the therapeutic uses of psychedelic treatments to the plight of LGBTQ immigrants in Boston, this segment takes a look at what’s making headlines.

Breaking news is a special segment of a television or radio show, usually during regular programming, that interrupts the normal flow of an anchor’s commentary to cover a specific story of significant interest or urgency. Prior to the advent of 24-hour news channels, stations would typically only use a breaking-news interruption for extremely serious events, such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy, or for a severe weather event such as an imminent landfalling hurricane. Breaking-news coverage is often indicated by a graphic overlaid on top of the main broadcast, and may include lower thirds that change to indicate the urgency of the report.

When a network’s breaking-news feed is activated, it alerts its affiliates to stand by. A countdown sequence then starts, allowing affiliates to switch to the network’s feed and begin broadcasting the report.
